Health & Safety

The safety record of the construction industry is poor in comparison with most other industries. Persons working on site are approximately 6 times more likely to be involved in an accident than other workers.

The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) indicate that for the period 2003/04:

71 people on site had fatal accidents, of which 46% were due to falling from height and 15% were due to being struck by a moving or falling object. This does however represent a 5% fall from the previous period 2001/02.

4095 people suffered major injuries, a slight increase of 1%. 31% were due to falling from height, 25% as a result of slips or trips and 17% were due to being struck by a moving or falling object.

9265 people suffered over-3-day injuries, a fall of 4%.

The cost to the individual employee and their family in the event of a death or disablement is incalculable. In addition, the construction industry pays out millions of pounds in compensation and fines as a result of Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecutions.

The HSE Construction Division launched their FaTaL Risk Campaign 2004, to concentrate their efforts to reduce accidents in:

Falls – during work at height

Transport – movement of vehicles and mobile plant

Lifting – operation involving heavy loads.

In addition to the services offered to the construction industry, safety consultancy services are available to building owners, operators and clients to enable them to comply with the latest legislation under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
